Therapist
Tena Koe, Ko Debbie McMillan ahau. Our programmes kakano/seed developed while I was a trauma counsellor at Auckland Women's prison. I wanted wahine who had limited access to resources and support, to have a positive approach to their distress and trauma. This easily translates to wahine in our community.
A previous participant shared how yoga had enabled her to be present to her internal self; Ko au Te Whare, Ko Te Whare ko au/I am the the house and the house is me. As a cognitive behavioural therapist (CBT), I believe that yoga is the physical side of the CBT approach. As the testimony above demonstrates, we can learn to nurture ourselves rather than criticise or amplify our limitations. This behaviour then counteracts our negative core beliefs and provides us with the opportunity to trust and recognize that our internal capacity is limitless.
"I feel very privileged to be able to offer this treatment along with your therapy to reinforce your mahi for sustained change" - Debbie

Why Trauma informed yoga?
The benefits of Yoga and body connection within the realm of trauma healing have been known for some time.
Van Der Kolk (2014), author of ‘The Body Keeps The Score’ states that “Yoga is just one of many time-honored ways to help people experience ownership of their bodies and to feel safe and in control. Our most recent research study on this subject showed that yoga had better results than any drug studies so far for PTSD”.
Through the practice of yoga, our clients have experienced profound transformations in their lives. They have grown in physical, mindful, and emotional strength, enabling them to show up for themselves more effectively. As a result, they are more present, capable of expressing themselves clearly and understanding their emotions better. This newfound awareness has fostered a deeper connection with their physical bodies, leading to increased self-compassion and confidence.
Trauma informed yoga is an opportunity to heal and graduate from PTSD post traumatic stress disorder to PTG - post traumatic growth.
This programme offers a safe space for participants to reconnect back to themselves, while being a part of a strong, supportive group as we move towards the path of collective healing. As said by Gabor Mate - “Safety is not the absence of threat, It is the presence of connection”.
“Ehara tāku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini”
My strength is not as an individual, but as a collective
